Greetings from the Douglas Street School community. We are very excited to be a part of this special program and we look forward to the mutual benefits that each of us can gain from the experience.
Our school is located in the town of Truro, which has a population of 30,000. Presently our school has a student population of 217 students and 12 teachers. Our School is also implementing French Immersion with the lead class currently in grade two.
We are pleased to offer the provincial curriculum and teachers work hard to create and enrich effective and meaningful learning opportunities. A special focus is put on individual progress in the areas of literacy and mathematics.
We are a member of the League of Peaceful Schools and our grade five and six students are trained as peer mediators. All students are taught to deal with conflict using peaceful problem solving strategies including the use of I-Messages and “Hands are for Helping” slogan. Our goal is to increase positive and respectful behaviors in the school.
Douglas Street School is a culturally diverse school and we demonstrate and promote cross-cultural understanding, race relations and sensitivity.
Much work is done to see that all students are included. Through enriching the curriculum and providing a warm welcome atmosphere an environment is created where learning can take place. I can think of no better way to enhance global understanding than with this opportunity. We welcome you to join us in our learning!
Sincerely,
Gail Smith
